Wills
Mirror wills for couples
Two wills that reflect each other: typically everything to each other first, then to the children or whoever you choose. Prepared together, at your kitchen table if you like.

What mirror wills are
Mirror wills are a pair of wills with matching terms. Most couples leave everything to each other and then, when the second of them dies, to their children or other chosen beneficiaries. Each will is a separate document and can be changed independently later.
They suit married couples, civil partners and unmarried partners alike. For unmarried partners they are especially important, because without a will a partner has no automatic right to inherit anything.
Mirror wills are a good fit if you
- Want the same arrangements as each other
- Have children together and want them to inherit after you have both gone
- Want to name the same executors and guardians
- Would like to sort both wills out in one meeting
When mirror wills may not be enough
If either of you has children from an earlier relationship, or you want to protect a share of the home for particular people, a simple mirror will may not do what you intend. The survivor is free to change their will later. In those situations a will with a trust in it, or two separate wills, can give more certainty. We will explain the options honestly.
Common questions
Can my partner change their mirror will after I die?
Yes. Mirror wills are not binding on each other, so the survivor can make a new will. If that worries you, ask us about including a trust in your wills to protect particular assets.
Do we need to be married?
No. Any couple can make mirror wills. If you are not married or in a civil partnership, a will is the only way to make sure your partner inherits.
Do we both need to be at the meeting?
Ideally yes, so that both of you can ask questions and confirm your wishes. We can see you together at home.
